More than just a Facial

As a child growing up in South Africa and spending most of my childhood in and around a swimming pool, I learnt very early on, through the words of my late father “you only get one skin in this life - take care of it, won’t you?”

Did you know that our skin is the largest organ of the body, and our face is essentially an expression of who we are. Taking care of it is a great act of self-love and self-care.

Although facials are known to be a relaxing and calming experience, at YOUR SKIN 360, their benefits extend far beyond that. As a skin specialist, I understand the complexity of the facial skin and consider not only what's visible to the eye but the entirety of you. This includes your mind, body, and emotional well-being. During a skin treatment, I consider all 3 layers of the skin, the lymphatic system, as well as the muscular and skeletal system. Believe it or not - it’s not just Botox and fillers that can give you that lifted and contoured effect.

A consistent and even the simplest routine can yield lasting results. That said, it’s imperative, whether you wish to keep your routine simple or not- that you are using the right products, in the right way. All products are not created equal, and the same goes for ingredients.

Active ingredients:

I am a self-confessed ingredient junkie. The quality and concentration of active ingredients are what have the ability to change your skin .Not only do active ingredients have the ability to penetrate deeper into the skin accelerating cell turnover and targeting various processes that effect collagen and elastin stimulation, they also have the ability to work on a cellular level and a multitude of different biological processes that happen in the skin due to inflammation, oxidative stress, dehydration to name a few.

Some of my favourite Active Ingredients and why you need to be using them:

Retinol:

The holy grail of Healthy Aging. A source of Vitamin A increases cell renewal and turnover. Stimulates new collagen biosynthesis to help reverse signs of premature aging that include fine lines and wrinkles, dark spots, and refine skins texture. Use with care though, if not used correctly this can cause sensitivity in the skin so be sure to work with your skin specialist to support how to incorporate this into your skin routine.

Antioxidants/Vitamin C:

Vitamin C is an incredible antioxidant that works wonders at fighting off free radical damage caused by oxidative stress in the body and skin. Pro tip: Vit C can be a volatile ingredient and needs to be formulated with care to keep its molecular structure stable, so be sure you are not just grabbing any bottle that says Vit C. Using a reputable brand is essential here.

Peptides:

There are many peptides out there, all with similar benefits, triggering collagen production, helping to increase firmness and restore elasticity in the skin. Once again, be sure to find the right one for you, and be supported by your skin specialist.

AHA/BHA (Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids):

These are group of chemical exfoliants that dissolve the glue-like bonds between skin cells to leave the skin smoother, brighter and softer. Depending on your skin type and concerns, incorporating these into your routine 2-3 times a week is vital for product absorption, increasing cell- turnover and minimizing signs of premature again.
